A Gender-Equal Transport System
By means of this sub-goal, the Swedish government is striving to achieve a gender-equal maritime transport system designed to meet the transport needs of women and men alike. Women and men shall be given equal opportunity to influence the origin, design and management of the maritime transport system and their values shall be accorded equal importance.
Towards that end, the Swedish Maritime Administration worked with other transport agencies and the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communications Analysis (SIKA) to conduct a study of gender distribution in the maritime sector. The study encompassed decision bodies, employees in the Swedish maritime sector and educational programmes for various maritime professions.
Based on the knowledge acquired through the studies, the Swedish Maritime Administration will be continuing active efforts to devise strategies for improving gender equality in the maritime sector. As the issue is relevant to all types of transport, the strategy process will be carried out in cooperation with other transport agencies and SIKA.
Action towards gender equality by public agencies is, however, not enough. We need a new perspective on the issue and the entire transport sector, at all levels, must be brought to understand the opportunities inherent in greater gender equality and diversity and to devote energy and commitment to achieving those goals.
