The major part of the Swedish Maritime Administration's operations are organized in six business areas, which together make up the Business Department.
Business Area Pilotage
In the new organization, Sweden’s coastline is divided in nine pilotage areas, each with their own area manager. The areas are: Luleå, Gävle, Stocholm, Södertälje, Kalmar, Malmo, Gothenburg, Marstrand and Lake Vänern/Trollhätte Canal. The business area Pilotage is responsible for efficient planning and performance of pilotage services as well as marketing of deep sea pilotage.
Business Area Transport and Fairway Services
Business Area Transport and Fairway Services provides pilot transports and performs maintenance of maritime safety equipment. The business area is also responsible for the development of commercial services within its area. Geographically, the activities are divided into seven areas.
Business Area Maritime Communication
Business Area Maritime Communication includes maritime traffic information, the joint rescue co-ordination center, icebreaker management and MSI. The business area is also responsible for the development of commercial services in surveillance and communications for shipping.
Business Area Construction and Engineering
The business area is responsible for the technical management of shipping lanes, Swedish Maritime Administration’s buildings and infrastructure for maritime information systems. Construction and Engineering is also responsible for service and installation of equipment in the Swedish Maritime Administration’s vessels.
Business Area Hydrography
Business Area Hydrography is responsible for for Swedish Maritime Administration’s activities in geodesy and hydrography, as well as for updating and management of hydrographic databases. In addition, the business area is responsible for marketing and providing hydrographic products and services. The business area also handles Sweden's commitments as a member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
Business Area Trollhätte Canal
Business area Trollhätte Canal is responsible for traffic, pilot ordering administration, maneuvering the locks and bridges, and operation and maintenance of the Trollhätte Canal. The business area manager is responsible for dam safety in the channel and for the Swedish Maritime Administration's areas in the Gota River.
