The Financial Department manages the Swedish Maritime Administration’s long and short-term financial and economic planning and prepares budget appropriation issues. The department is responsible for interim and annual reports, the budget process, following up financial activities and for special financial follow-ups ordered by the Director-General. The department’s responsibility extends to ensuring cohesiveness in matters related to planning of financial management and following up all activities of the Administration. The department is responsible for coordinating the development of systems and procedures and is in charge of day-to-day accounting and payroll administration and issues instructions related to accounting.

Within the Financial Department, the Purchasing Division is responsible for the Swedish Maritime Administration's procurement, office services, purchasing and sales. There is also the IT unit responsible for and the coordinator of the development and operation of the Swedish Maritime Administration's IT system and is a service agency for system development, system management, operation and support. The Rescue Division prepares strategic issues related to maritime and aeronautical search and rescue rescue.

The Financial Department has system ownership of the IT infrastructure and the associated basic selection of common programs and systems and is responsible for IT-related strategy and security issues.
